Healthcare Data Analyst

Essential Functions

  • Programs, data mines and analyzes healthcare data to develop organizational efficiencies, and reports findings and recommendations to upper management;
  • Applies advanced mathematical and quantitative analytic methods, as well as critical qualitative perspectives, to the development of MHN’s web applications, databases, dashboards, population health analyses, clinical workflows, product development, medical cost containment analyses, and machine-learning projects;
  • Builds and maintains secure systems for the periodic and automated transfer of large volumes of sensitive patient data between MHN and its partners, including medical homes, health centers, hospitals, and technology partners;
  • Uses SAS (Statistical Analysis System) to generate, validate, and analyze “risk scores,” to determine the likelihood that a Medicaid patient will experience a particular outcome (e.g., increased medical costs or hospital admission);
  • Builds data marts and identifies, oversees, extracts, transforms and loads processes of large data files related to care management activities, medical claims, pharmacy claims, hospital authorizations, electronic specialist consultations, and community connect initiatives;
  • Creates financial reports to break down medical spending into different service categories (e.g. inpatient, outpatient, and rehab), to identify areas of higher and lower costs and to compare performance for different health centers;
  • Creates utilization reports that provide information on how various healthcare resources are used within MHN;
  • Analyzes patient claims, eligibility, empanelment and care coordination activity to identify data patterns, trends, and correlations, to create and distribute utilization reports;
  • Builds programs that automates dashboards for end-users in order for them to leverage analytic data and run reports from SAS code;
  • Creates and validates data models to help predict various outcomes, including which patients are likely to utilize emergency departments within a three-month span and make recommendations as to how visits can be reduced or eliminated;
  • Creates maps and data flow diagrams, to outline how data flows from and through MHN’s data analytics team to the organization as a whole, and creates Excel dashboards for management to provide high level overview and graphs;
  • Uses SAS AMO, batch processes, and shell scripts to develop and package code, which allows non-technical end users to access analytical data through an Excel add-in.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in data analytics, economics statistics, public health or related field of study with a quantitative emphasis; and,
  • knowledge, based on education, training or experience, of 1) working with healthcare and insurance data; and, 2) using the software tools SAS, R, Python, and SQL.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position that regularly requires a 40-hour work week.

This position operates in a professional office environment, and physical presence and regular attendance are essential functions of the job. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
